Most golf cart windshield scratches come from cleaning dust or grit across dry plastic, not from normal airflow. The safest routine is to rinse loose dirt first, use plenty of water with a plastic-safe cleaner, wipe gently with a clean microfiber cloth, and avoid household products that can attack acrylic or polycarbonate.
Know what your windshield is made from
Acrylic and polycarbonate need similar gentle cleaning, but they are not identical. Acrylic usually has better natural surface hardness, while polycarbonate is much more impact resistant and may rely on a hard coating for scratch resistance. If you do not know the material, use the most conservative plastic-safe method.
Our acrylic vs polycarbonate guide explains the material differences in more detail.
Rinse before you wipe
Dust, sand, pollen, and road grit act like abrasive compound when dragged across a dry windshield. Rinse the panel with clean water or gently flood the surface before wiping. If the cart has been on dusty trails, spend extra time on this first step.
Use a clean microfiber cloth
A soft microfiber cloth is safer than paper towels or a shop rag. Use one cloth for washing and another clean cloth for drying. If the cloth falls on the ground, do not put it back on the windshield without washing it because trapped grit can create fine circular scratches.
Choose a plastic-safe cleaner
Use mild soap and water or a cleaner specifically approved for acrylic/polycarbonate. Avoid strong ammonia-based glass cleaners, harsh solvents, gasoline, brake cleaner, acetone, and abrasive compounds unless the windshield manufacturer specifically approves a product.
Do not scrub bug residue aggressively
Soften bugs and dried debris with a wet cloth for several minutes before wiping. Repeated dry scrubbing can haze the panel. Work in small sections and rinse the cloth as it picks up dirt.
Watch the edges and hinges
Folding windshields collect dirt around hinges, rubber bumpers, and lower edges. Clean those areas carefully so grit does not get trapped between the upper and lower panels. Check that hinge hardware is secure without pinching the plastic.
How to reduce scratches during storage
- Do not lay tools, keys, or cargo against the windshield.
- Keep enclosure zippers and metal snaps from rubbing the panel.
- Use a breathable cart cover that does not flap violently against the plastic.
- Avoid stacking removed windshields without soft protection between them.
- Keep abrasive dust off the cart before pulling a cover over it.
Can light scratches be polished?
Very light marks on some acrylic panels can sometimes be improved with a plastic polish intended for that material. Deep scratches, cracks, crazing, and damage to hard-coated surfaces need more caution. Aggressive polishing can distort visibility or remove a protective coating.
What causes cloudy windshields?
Cloudiness can come from micro-scratches, chemical damage, UV aging, or residue left by incompatible cleaners. If normal washing does not restore clarity, inspect the panel in bright light. Replacing a badly hazed windshield may be safer than trying to polish out widespread damage.
Care after rain or coastal use
Rinse road film, mud, or salt residue promptly. Salt and grit around hinges and fasteners can also accelerate corrosion of the mounting hardware. Dry the panel before folding it for long-term storage.
Simple maintenance schedule
Rinse whenever the panel is visibly dusty, wash it before dirt builds up, inspect hinges monthly during frequent use, and check for cracks around mounting holes at the start of each season. Good cleaning habits can preserve clarity longer than any one cleaning product.
Clean in straight passes instead of circles
When possible, wipe gently in one direction rather than polishing in tight circles. If a scratch appears later, straight-line marks are less visually distracting and easier to identify than a field of circular swirls.
Do not clean a hot windshield
Allow a sun-heated windshield to cool before applying cleaner. Rapid temperature changes and fast evaporation can leave residue, and a hot softened surface can be easier to mark while wiping.
Inspect mounting stress during cleaning
Cleaning is a good time to look around drilled holes, hinges, and corners for small cracks or whitening. Early stress marks can indicate over-tightened hardware or a support that is pulling the panel out of alignment.
