The Club Car Precedent is a platform family that began with the Precedent i2 in 2004. It was sold in gas and electric configurations and later expanded into additional variants, including longer-body and connected models. Because equipment changed over time, the exact serial number and model prefix are more useful than the word “Precedent” by itself.
2004: the Precedent i2 arrives
Club Car’s company history identifies 2004 as the launch year for the Precedent i2. It was developed as a next-generation golf car and entered the market while the older DS was still being produced. That overlap is why a mid-2000s Club Car should never be identified by year alone.
The DS and Precedent overlapped until 2014
Club Car states that the DS was produced from 1980 through 2014. As a result, 2004–2014 is an overlap period. A 2008 or 2012 Club Car may be a DS or a Precedent depending on its model prefix and configuration.
See our DS vs Precedent comparison if you are trying to separate the two platforms.
Precedent i2
The i2 is the best-known Precedent configuration and the basis for many two-passenger fleet and personal carts. It has been offered with gas and electric powertrains across different model years. Battery systems, controllers, engines, chargers, and standard equipment changed during the platform’s life, so parts should still be matched by year and powertrain.
Precedent i2L
The i2L designation appears in Club Car’s model-prefix directory on longer Precedent variants. Longer-body versions can change overall dimensions and accessory fitment, especially for roofs, enclosures, seats, body panels, and transport planning. Do not assume a standard i2 measurement applies to an i2L configuration.
Precedent i3
Club Car introduced the Precedent i3 in 2014 with integrated GPS and connected technology for golf-course use. The i3 name therefore refers to more than cosmetic trim. Electronics, course-management equipment and dash-related parts can differ from a basic Precedent.
Gas and electric versions
Precedent model names do not tell you everything about the powertrain. Depending on year and configuration, the cart may use a gas engine, lead-acid electric drive, or a later conversion or factory-supported lithium setup. A used Precedent may also have an aftermarket motor, controller or charger.
Why model year matters for parts
Many accessories fit broad Precedent year ranges, but service parts can be more specific. Controllers, solenoids, chargers, MCOR/throttle components, wiring harnesses, engine parts, clutches, brake parts and steering components may change by year or system. Always compare the serial number with the part maker’s fitment range.
How to read the Club Car serial number
Club Car says the first letter or letters of the serial number identify the model. The following four digits identify the model year and production week. The remaining digits are the unique sequence number. The label is commonly below the passenger-side cup holder or above the pedals.
Our Precedent identification guide walks through the process.
Representative Precedent specifications
A Club Car Precedent brochure for a two-passenger fleet model lists a 91.5-inch overall length, 47.25-inch width, 68.5-inch overall height, 65.5-inch wheelbase and 4.5-inch ground clearance. Those numbers are useful as a reference, but rear seats, longer variants, lift kits and other configurations can change the actual dimensions.
Buying a used Precedent by year
Newer is not automatically better. For electric carts, battery age and charger condition can outweigh a small model-year difference. For gas carts, engine condition, clutch operation and maintenance history matter. On any cart, inspect steering, brakes, suspension, frame, tires and accessory wiring.

Bottom line
The Precedent family starts in 2004 and includes several configurations rather than one unchanged model. Use the i2, i2L or i3 designation where available, but rely on the serial prefix, model year and powertrain before ordering parts or comparing used carts.
