How Many Amps Do Golf Cart Lights Draw?

Golf cart light amp draw depends on total wattage and operating voltage. Modern LED headlights often use far less current than older halogen lighting, but a complete cart can also have tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, marker lights, rock lights, and an LED bar running from the same 12V accessory circuit.

Use watts divided by volts

The basic estimate is amps = watts ÷ volts. A 36-watt LED light running on 12V draws about 3 amps. Two 36-watt lights together would be about 6 amps before allowing for any conversion losses or other accessories.

Example current estimates

Total light wattage Approx. current at 12V
24W 2A
36W 3A
60W 5A
120W 10A
180W 15A

These are simple theoretical values. Real systems can draw slightly more because voltage reducers and wiring are not perfectly efficient.

Why LED lights are easier on the electrical system

LED lights can produce useful light output with less electrical power than many older halogen designs. That reduces current draw and makes it easier to run several lighting functions from a properly sized accessory circuit.

Do not size a reducer exactly at the calculated load

If your lights and accessories could draw 15 amps at the same time, a 15-amp reducer leaves no practical headroom. Choose a reducer with enough continuous capacity for the maximum combined load plus a reasonable margin.

Use our golf cart voltage reducer guide for 36V-to-12V and 48V-to-12V systems.

Add every accessory that shares the circuit

Count more than the headlights. A fan, USB charger, stereo, turn signals, brake lights, and underglow can all use the same 12V output. The reducer and main accessory feed need to support the combined current when several devices are on together.

Fuse each circuit correctly

A fuse protects the wiring, not just the accessory. Follow the light-kit instructions and choose wire gauge and fuse size for the actual current and cable length. Never install a larger fuse simply because the correct one keeps blowing.

Measure if the specifications are unclear

If the light’s wattage is not listed, use the manufacturer’s current specification or measure the circuit with an appropriate DC clamp meter or ammeter. Do not place a small multimeter directly in series with a high-current accessory unless the meter and leads are rated for that current.

Bottom line

Calculate golf cart light current by dividing total watts by operating voltage, then include every accessory sharing the circuit and leave headroom in the reducer and wiring. LED lighting usually keeps current manageable, but large light bars and multiple accessories can still create a substantial 12V load.
