How to Install LED Light Strips on a Golf Cart

Installing LED light strips on a golf cart is mainly a power, weatherproofing, and cable-routing job. Most strips are designed for 12V input, so a 36V or 48V electric cart normally needs a properly sized voltage reducer rather than a direct connection to the traction pack.

Choose the right strip for outdoor use

Use an LED strip or underglow kit intended for vehicle or outdoor use. Look for sealed connectors, weather-resistant housings, and mounting hardware that can tolerate vibration, water spray, and temperature changes.

Confirm the input voltage

Read the kit label before wiring. A 12V strip must not be connected directly to a 36V or 48V battery pack. Use a DC-DC voltage reducer that matches the cart and has enough output capacity for the strip plus any other accessories sharing it.

Our golf cart voltage reducer guide explains 36V-to-12V and 48V-to-12V setups.

Plan the lighting layout first

Decide whether the strips will go under the rocker area, around the roof supports, beneath seats, or inside storage areas. Avoid mounting them where tires, suspension parts, steering components, or passengers can hit the strip or wiring.

Clean the mounting surface

Adhesive-backed strips hold best on a clean, dry surface. Remove dirt, wax, grease, and loose material. For exposed underbody locations, use the supplied clips or additional mechanical retention instead of trusting adhesive alone.

Fuse the positive feed

Install an appropriate fuse close to the 12V power source or reducer output. Size the fuse and wire for the actual current draw specified by the lighting kit. Do not oversize the fuse simply to prevent nuisance blowing.

Route and protect the wiring

Keep wires away from sharp edges, moving suspension, hot engine components, and areas that collect debris. Use grommets where wiring passes through metal and secure long runs so they cannot sag or rub.

Install the switch or controller

Many LED strip kits include a switch, remote receiver, or Bluetooth controller. Mount the control module where it is protected from direct water exposure and where signal or switch access remains reliable.

Test before finalizing the installation

Power the lights before hiding all wiring. Check every section, color mode, switch function, and connection. Then secure the harness and confirm that steering and suspension can move through their full range without touching the wiring.

Bottom line

A clean LED-strip installation uses the correct voltage source, weather-resistant components, proper fusing, protected wiring, and secure mounting. On higher-voltage electric carts, a voltage reducer is usually the key component.
