Golf Cart Drive Belt: Signs of Wear, Sizing & Replacement

Gas golf carts with a CVT-style drivetrain use a drive belt between the primary and secondary clutches. Belt condition affects acceleration, top speed and how smoothly the transmission changes ratio. A belt that looks similar to the original is not necessarily the correct size, so fitment should be matched to the model and clutch system.

Signs of a worn drive belt

Common signs include glazing, cracks, frayed edges, missing chunks, excessive narrowing, slipping under acceleration, slow takeoff or reduced top speed. A new belt will not fix every performance problem; worn clutch sheaves, weak clutch springs, engine issues and incorrect alignment can create similar symptoms.

Why belt dimensions matter

Width, effective length and belt construction affect how high and low the belt rides in the clutch sheaves. An incorrect belt can change the starting ratio, create heat or limit full shift-out. Use the cart manufacturer’s part reference or a reliable fitment chart rather than measuring only the old belt, which may already be reduced in width from wear.

Replacement checks

With the engine off and the cart secured, inspect both clutch sheaves for grooves, corrosion and contamination. Clean according to the manufacturer procedure and never lubricate belt-contact surfaces. Verify clutch alignment and mounting condition before installing the new belt.

After installation

Confirm the belt tracks correctly and test the cart gradually. If slipping, vibration or poor speed remains, inspect the clutch system rather than assuming the new belt is defective. Our golf cart clutch problems guide explains primary and secondary clutch symptoms, while the torque guide covers broader performance factors.

Do not judge a belt by cracks alone

A belt can look clean yet be worn too narrow to operate correctly. If the manufacturer publishes a service-width limit, measure the belt at the specified point. Repeated belt damage also suggests a clutch, alignment or mounting problem that should be corrected before another belt is installed.

This Yamaha drive and starter-generator belt kit is a relevant replacement example for compatible gas carts. Confirm the exact model before ordering.
