Golf Cart Clutch Problems: Primary vs Secondary Clutch Symptoms

Gas golf carts that use a continuously variable transmission typically have a primary drive clutch and a secondary driven clutch connected by the drive belt. When acceleration, hill performance or top speed changes, the belt and both clutches need to be considered as a system.

Primary clutch symptoms

The primary clutch responds mainly to engine speed. Problems can show up as delayed engagement, harsh engagement, a clutch that does not close smoothly, poor belt travel, rattling or a cart that struggles to reach normal speed. Worn bushings, weights, rollers, springs or sheave surfaces can contribute depending on the clutch design.

Secondary clutch symptoms

The secondary clutch reacts to load and belt position. A sticking or worn secondary can cause sluggish backshift on hills, poor acceleration after slowing, belt heat, abnormal belt position or inconsistent performance under load. Springs and ramp or helix components vary by model, so use the correct service information.

Do not overlook the belt

A narrow, glazed or incorrect belt can mimic clutch failure. Inspect belt condition and verify the correct size before replacing expensive clutch assemblies. Our drive-belt guide covers fitment and wear in more detail.

Inspection and repair decisions

With the engine off, look for obvious sheave damage, wobble, loose hardware and contaminated belt surfaces. Clutch removal can require a model-specific puller and stored spring force can make disassembly hazardous. If internal clutch service is needed, follow the manufacturer procedure or use a qualified technician.

If the clutch system appears healthy but the cart still lacks performance, check engine condition, fuel delivery and overall gearing. The fuel-pump guide and torque guide cover two other common diagnostic paths.

Heat is a useful clue

Excessive belt or clutch heat after a short drive can point to slipping, binding or incorrect belt fitment. Compare both sheaves for smooth movement and inspect ventilation around the CVT. Continuing to drive with heavy slip can damage the belt and clutch surfaces, turning a minor service issue into a larger repair.

This Yamaha secondary driven clutch is a useful model-specific replacement example when diagnosis confirms clutch wear. Verify fitment before ordering.
