Golf Cart Hesitates When Accelerating: Causes and Fixes

Hesitation during acceleration usually means the cart is receiving an inconsistent command or cannot deliver power smoothly under load. The best diagnosis starts with whether the cart is electric or gas and whether the hesitation happens from a stop, only uphill, or after the cart warms up.

Electric golf cart causes

Weak batteries, poor cable connections, a worn throttle input, solenoid contact problems or controller faults can all create hesitation. Start with battery condition and voltage drop under load, then inspect the battery cables. On Club Car and E-Z-GO systems, throttle devices such as the MCOR or ITS sensor deserve attention when pedal response is inconsistent.

Gas golf cart causes

A gas cart that stumbles as the throttle opens may have restricted fuel flow, a dirty carburetor, incorrect choke operation, ignition weakness or a worn drive belt. Inspect the fuel filter and pump before assuming the carburetor is at fault. Also check whether the choke fully releases after starting.

Pay attention to when it happens

Hesitation only when cold can point toward choke or mixture issues. Hesitation after several minutes of driving can suggest a heat-sensitive ignition component or electrical connection. Hesitation only on hills can expose weak batteries, excessive resistance, belt slip or clutch problems that are less obvious on level ground.

Do not mask the symptom with adjustment

Increasing controller output, changing governor settings or adjusting throttle linkage before finding the root cause can make the cart less reliable. Restore correct battery, fuel, ignition and throttle operation first. Then use the manufacturer specifications for any adjustment that remains necessary.

When to stop testing

If wiring is overheated, the controller reports faults, or the cart surges unpredictably, avoid further road testing until the problem is diagnosed.

Compare light-load and heavy-load behavior

If hesitation disappears with one passenger but returns on hills or with cargo, load-sensitive problems become more likely. Battery voltage drop, cable resistance, clutch slip and fuel-delivery limits often become easier to identify when the symptom is compared under repeatable load conditions.

For compatible EZGO gas carts, this tune-up kit is useful when hesitation is tied to air, fuel or ignition service rather than the throttle system.
