Golf Cart Accelerator Pedal Not Working: Causes & Checks

If a golf cart accelerator pedal does nothing, the pedal itself is only one possible cause. The fault can be in the pedal switch, throttle sensor, wiring, key circuit, solenoid, controller, or, on a gas cart, the mechanical throttle and starting system. The fastest diagnosis starts by identifying whether the cart is gas or electric and confirming the exact model and year.

Start with the simple checks

Verify the key switch is on, the forward/reverse selector is fully engaged, the battery pack or 12V starting battery has adequate voltage, and any run/tow switch is in the correct operating position. Inspect pedal movement for binding, broken return springs, loose hardware, or debris under the floor mat. If the cart is completely dead, also check the main fuse and key switch before assuming the throttle system has failed.

Electric-cart throttle faults

Electric carts use different accelerator-input systems. Depending on the platform, the pedal may operate an MCOR, inductive throttle sensor, potentiometer, microswitch, or another electronic input. A failed sensor can cause no response, hesitation, surging, or intermittent operation. Do not substitute resistance or voltage specifications from another model; test against the service information for your cart.

Gas-cart causes

On gas carts, pressing the accelerator can also activate the starting circuit. Problems may come from the pedal switch, starter-generator circuit, throttle cable, governor linkage, carburetor or EFI throttle system. If the starter turns but the engine will not respond, the problem is different from a pedal that never activates the starter.

What to test next

Inspect connectors for corrosion, pulled pins and damaged wires, then test the pedal switch or throttle signal with a multimeter only if you have the correct wiring diagram. If the input signal changes correctly but the cart still will not move, continue downstream to the solenoid and controller or drive system. Avoid bypassing pedal safety switches; they are part of the cart’s unintended-movement protection.

For EZGO TXT or Medalist carts that use an ITS setup, this is a relevant replacement example. Confirm the exact model and year before ordering.
