Golf Cart Fuel Filter: Symptoms & Replacement

A golf cart fuel filter traps contamination before fuel reaches the carburetor or injection system. As the filter loads with debris, fuel flow can drop enough to cause hesitation, weak acceleration or stalling under load.

Signs of a restricted fuel filter

Common symptoms include hard starting, power loss at higher throttle, intermittent stalling and a fuel bowl that does not refill normally. A failing pump, clogged tank pickup or carburetor problem can create similar symptoms, so inspect the whole delivery path.

Check the system before replacing parts

Inspect the fuel line for kinks, cracks and leaks. If fuel delivery is still weak, use the fuel-pump guide. If fuel reaches the carburetor but the engine still runs poorly, review the carburetor guide.

Replacement basics

Use a filter designed for the cart’s fuel-system type and flow direction. Work on a cool engine, keep fuel away from ignition sources and replace hardened or cracked fuel hose at the same time if necessary.

Do not use fitment by appearance alone

Filters can look similar while using different hose sizes or flow characteristics. Match the part to the golf cart model, engine family and fuel-system design. After replacement, check carefully for leaks before operating the cart.

Why filter direction matters

Many inline filters are directional. Installing one backward can reduce flow or prevent the internal element from working as designed. Check for a flow arrow and orient it toward the carburetor or injection system according to the manufacturer instructions.

Look upstream too

If a replacement filter quickly fills with debris, inspect the fuel tank, pickup and hoses. Repeated contamination usually means the filter is catching a problem from elsewhere in the system rather than creating it.

Use fresh fuel during diagnosis

Old or contaminated fuel can imitate a restricted filter. If fuel age is unknown, include fuel quality in the diagnosis instead of assuming the filter alone is responsible.

For compatible EZGO TXT and RXV Kawasaki gas carts, this tune-up kit is a relevant example when fuel-filter service is due.
