The spark plug is a small part, but it has a major effect on starting, idle quality and combustion in a gas golf cart. A worn, fouled or incorrectly gapped plug can make the cart hard to start or cause misfiring under load.
Common bad spark-plug symptoms
Watch for difficult starting, rough idle, hesitation, misfires, weak acceleration or a plug that repeatedly becomes wet or heavily carboned. These symptoms can also come from fuel-delivery or ignition problems, so use the plug as a diagnostic clue rather than assuming it is always the root cause.
Check plug condition
After removing the plug from a cool engine, inspect the insulator, electrode wear and deposits. Oily, fuel-wet or heavily sooted plugs can point to other engine issues. If the engine also has fuel problems, see the fuel-pump guide and carburetor troubleshooting guide.
Use the correct gap
Spark-plug gap is not universal across all golf carts. Use the specification in the service manual for your exact engine and model year. An incorrect gap can weaken the spark or make ignition less consistent.
Replacement basics
Match the plug by manufacturer specification, thread size, reach and heat range. Start the new plug by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten it to the service-manual specification. Recheck the ignition lead and boot before starting the cart.
What the plug can reveal
Plug condition can help separate ignition and mixture problems. Heavy dry soot often points toward rich running, while a fuel-wet plug may indicate repeated cranking without combustion. A clean-looking plug can still be worn, so electrode condition and service history matter too.
When a new plug does not solve the problem
If misfire remains after installing the correct plug, inspect the ignition coil, plug lead and fuel delivery instead of repeatedly replacing plugs. A spark plug is often the symptom reporter, not the only failed part.
