How to Change Brakes on an EZGO Golf Cart

Replacing EZGO golf cart brakes is different from simply adjusting them. On many TXT-style mechanical drum systems, the job may involve removing the rear wheels and drums, inspecting the shoes and hardware, replacing worn parts, and then setting the brakes correctly. RXV models can use a different braking design, so identify the exact cart before buying parts.

Identify the EZGO model first

Confirm whether the cart is a TXT, RXV, Medalist, Marathon, or another EZGO platform, plus its model year. Brake shoes, drums, cables, and adjustment procedures are not universal across every EZGO.

Use our EZGO TXT model-year guide or RXV identification guide if needed.

Inspect before replacing parts

Brake problems can come from worn shoes, glazed drums, weak return springs, stretched cables, contaminated friction surfaces, seized adjusters, or poor adjustment. Replacing shoes without checking the rest of the system can leave the original problem unresolved.

Safe replacement sequence

  1. Park on a level surface and secure the cart from movement.
  2. Use proper lifting points and jack stands.
  3. Remove the wheel and access the brake drum according to the service procedure.
  4. Photograph the spring and hardware layout before disassembly.
  5. Replace worn shoes and damaged hardware in matched sets where appropriate.
  6. Clean braking surfaces with a suitable brake cleaner.
  7. Reassemble the drum, wheel, and hardware to the correct specifications.
  8. Adjust and test the brakes before normal driving.

Do not guess on RXV braking systems

Many electric RXV models use IntelliBrake-related components rather than a simple TXT-style mechanical setup. Follow the model-specific E-Z-GO service information instead of applying TXT procedures to an RXV.

Check both sides

If one rear brake is badly worn, inspect the opposite side as well. Uneven braking can cause pulling, longer stopping distance, or unpredictable pedal feel.

After replacement

Test the cart at very low speed on level ground. Verify service-brake operation, parking-brake hold, pedal feel, and straight stopping before carrying passengers or driving on slopes.

For adjustment rather than replacement, see how to adjust EZGO golf cart brakes.

Bottom line

EZGO brake replacement is a model-specific repair. Identify the cart, inspect the full brake assembly, replace worn parts correctly, and verify safe stopping before returning the cart to normal use.
