What Is a Golf Cart Body Made Of?

Most modern golf cart bodies use molded plastic or thermoplastic exterior panels over a metal frame or chassis. Older carts and some specialty models may use fiberglass or different composite panels, while structural parts such as the frame, suspension, roof supports, and seat brackets are usually metal.

The body is not the frame

The visible front cowl, rear body, dash, and trim panels are mainly cosmetic and protective. They are mounted to the structural chassis underneath. That distinction matters when repairing cracks or planning a body swap.

Molded plastic and thermoplastic panels

Many newer carts use injection-molded or thermoformed plastic panels because they are lightweight, corrosion resistant, and easier to shape than metal bodywork. Different plastics require different repair products and paint preparation.

Fiberglass bodies

Some older carts, aftermarket bodies, and specialty shells use fiberglass. Fiberglass can often be repaired with resin and reinforcement materials, but the repair method is different from welding or plastic repair.

Metal components still matter

Even when the outer body is plastic, the cart may use steel or aluminum for the chassis, seat supports, roof struts, bumpers, and other structural parts. Surface rust or corrosion on those components should be treated separately from cosmetic panel damage.

Why material matters for repairs

Paint, adhesives, fillers, and plastic-welding methods need to match the actual panel material. Using the wrong solvent or repair compound can cause poor adhesion, warping, cracking, or discoloration.

How to identify the body material

Look for molded markings on the back of the panel, check the service or parts information for the model, and inspect whether the material has a fiberglass weave, molded plastic texture, or metal substrate.

Body kits are model-specific

Replacement body kits and cowls must fit the exact platform. A Yamaha, Club Car, or EZGO body is not a universal shell.

For related fitment examples, see our EZGO body kit guide and Yamaha body kit guide.

Bottom line

Golf cart bodies are commonly made from molded plastic, thermoplastic, fiberglass, or composite panels attached to a metal chassis. Identify the material before painting, repairing, drilling, or replacing a panel.
