What Size Battery Does a Gas Golf Cart Use?

Most gas golf carts use a 12V starting battery, but there is no single physical battery size that fits every Club Car, E-Z-GO, Yamaha, or other gas model. The correct replacement depends on the cart’s battery tray, terminal orientation, cable reach, starting requirements, and manufacturer specification.

Voltage is only the first check

Two batteries can both be 12V and still have different case dimensions, terminal positions, capacities, and starting ratings. Confirm the complete specification instead of choosing a replacement only because the voltage matches.

Check the existing battery label

If the cart still has the correct battery installed, record the brand, model number, case size, terminal layout, and rating information. This provides a practical starting point when shopping for a replacement.

Measure the battery tray

If the old battery is missing or questionable, measure the tray length, width, and available height. Also check the hold-down system and cable positions. A battery that physically fits but places the positive and negative posts on the wrong sides can create unsafe cable routing.

Use the owner’s or service manual

The best source is the specification for the exact make, model, and model year. Gas powertrains and battery trays have changed across generations, so avoid assuming that one battery group used on an older cart will fit a newer one.

Starting capability matters

A gas golf cart battery must provide enough current for the starter or starter-generator system. The required rating varies by engine and electrical design. Do not replace it with a small accessory battery simply because it is 12V.

Do not confuse gas and electric battery requirements

Electric carts use deep-cycle traction batteries or a lithium traction pack. Gas carts use a starting/accessory battery. Those applications place different demands on the battery.

Replacement checklist

  • 12V system requirement
  • Correct physical dimensions
  • Correct terminal orientation
  • Enough starting capacity
  • Compatible hold-down and tray
  • Cables that reach without stretching
  • Specification approved for the exact cart model

Check the charging system after replacement

If the old battery failed because it was not being charged correctly, a new battery may soon develop the same problem. If voltage keeps dropping, inspect the charging system using our gas golf cart charging guide.

Bottom line

Most gas golf carts use a 12V battery, but the correct group size is model-specific. Match the battery’s physical size, terminals, starting capability, and manufacturer specification before installing it.
