Golf Cart Street Safety: Lights, Mirrors, Seat Belts, and Visibility

Golf carts are used far beyond golf courses. In neighborhoods, resorts, campgrounds, and private communities, visibility and predictable driving become much more important.

Make the cart easy to see

Headlights, tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, and reflectors help other drivers understand where you are and what you are doing. Lighting should be bright enough to be useful without creating excessive glare.

Improve your field of view

Rear-view and side mirrors can reduce blind spots, especially on carts with rear seats, enclosures, or wide accessories. Adjust them from the normal driving position rather than while standing beside the cart.

Basic safety equipment

  • Working headlights and tail lights
  • Brake lights and turn signals where required
  • Rear-view and side mirrors
  • Horn
  • Seat belts where appropriate or required
  • Reflective elements for low-light use

Know the local rules

Street legality varies by location. Equipment requirements, speed limits, registration, licensing, and where golf carts may operate can differ significantly. Check the rules that apply where the cart will actually be driven.
