How to Remove an EZGO Steering Wheel

Removing an EZGO steering wheel is usually straightforward once the exact model is identified, but years of use can make the wheel tight on the steering shaft. The safest method is to mark alignment, remove the center hardware, and use the correct puller or approved removal method rather than hammering on the steering column.

Identify the cart and steering-wheel style

TXT, RXV, Medalist, Marathon, and other EZGO models can use different steering-wheel hubs and trim. Check the model and year before buying a replacement wheel, hub adapter, or puller.

See our EZGO TXT model guide or RXV model guide for identification help.

Set the wheels straight

Park on level ground with the front wheels pointing straight ahead. Mark the steering wheel and shaft relationship before loosening anything. This makes it easier to reinstall the wheel in the same centered position.

Remove the center trim and fastener

Depending on the wheel, remove the horn button, center cap, or trim piece to expose the retaining nut or bolt. Use the correct socket and avoid damaging wiring if the wheel includes any electrical accessories.

Leave the nut partly threaded at first

If the wheel is stuck on a tapered or splined shaft, leaving the retaining nut loosely threaded can keep the wheel from suddenly releasing into you. Do not use excessive hammering on the shaft because steering-column damage can be expensive.

Use a suitable puller if needed

A steering-wheel puller can apply even force to the hub. Make sure the puller attaches to the correct points and does not press against fragile plastic trim.

Inspect before reinstalling

Check the splines, hub, fastener, and steering-column condition. A damaged or loose hub should be corrected before the cart is driven.

Reinstall and test

Align the marks, tighten the retaining hardware to the applicable service specification, reinstall the trim, and verify that the wheel turns smoothly from lock to lock.

Bottom line

Do not force a stuck EZGO steering wheel with heavy impacts. Preserve the steering shaft, use proper puller pressure when needed, and confirm the wheel is centered and secure before driving.
