Can You Put a Trailer Hitch on a Golf Cart?

You can put a trailer hitch on many golf carts, but the hitch must fit the exact frame or rear-seat structure and the cart must be used within its towing limits. A receiver hitch does not automatically mean the cart is designed to tow a heavy trailer.

Check whether the cart has a hitch mounting point

Some aftermarket hitches bolt to the frame, bumper area, or rear-seat kit. The correct mounting location depends on the cart and accessory design. Avoid drilling into unknown structural areas when a model-specific bolt-on kit is available.

Rear-seat kits change fitment

A cart with a flip rear seat can require a hitch designed specifically for that seat-kit frame. Universal hitches may interfere with the footplate, grab bar, suspension, or body.

Our rear-seat accessories guide covers common add-ons around this area.

Towing capacity is the real limit

The hitch itself may be stronger than the golf cart. Brakes, motor or engine torque, controller temperature, tires, axle load, suspension, and terrain all determine what the vehicle can safely move.

Watch tongue weight

Too much downward load at the hitch can overload the rear suspension and reduce front-tire traction. Keep tongue weight and trailer load within the vehicle and hitch manufacturer limits.

Electric carts and towing

Heavy towing increases current draw and heat in the battery, controller, motor, and cables. A weak battery pack can make the problem worse. Do not assume a speed upgrade also improves towing ability.

For pulling-power considerations, see how to get more torque from a golf cart.

Gas carts and towing

Gas carts can also overheat or wear belts and clutches when heavily loaded. Maintenance condition and gearing matter as much as engine size.

Before towing

  • Confirm hitch fitment
  • Check the cart’s towing guidance
  • Inspect tire pressure and brakes
  • Secure the coupler and safety hardware
  • Keep loads balanced
  • Drive slowly, especially on slopes

Bottom line

A trailer hitch can be a useful golf cart accessory, but towing capacity must be based on the vehicle, not just the receiver. Use model-specific mounting hardware and stay within the cart and hitch limits.
